Health tips to prevent cough and cold in children during winter.

We have almost started entering the winter season. And as the weather is transiting, there’s a necessity to take care of our children’s health as they are the most susceptible to seasonal illnesses especially cough and cold. To keep your children healthy during winters, here are a few tips you should follow:
Wash hands properly
Our hands are from where all the pathogens enter our mouth and respiratory tract. Kids should be taught to keep their hands away from their face. They should be taught proper techniques to clean hands and how frequently it should be done. Also, encourage your kids to use hand sanitizers whenever water is not available.

Proper Winter Clothes
Children are notorious for showing tantrums while dressing up during winters. It is important to keep their ears, neck, and chest covered to avoid catching cold. Make sure they wear a cap, socks, and muffler while they go out as viral infections grow faster in cold environment.
Balanced diet
Diet plays a very important role in keeping away cold and flu during winters. Their diet should be full of vitamins and minerals to increase their immunity. Serve them more of green vegetables and fruits that are full of vitamins and antioxidants to keep their body strong and disease free during winters.
Vaccination
It is a good idea to get a flu vaccine shot before the starting of the flu season to avoid getting ill. It is especially important if your child is weak or has low immunity or if you are travelling to a flu prone area. Consult your vaccination doctor about the vaccines and doses available for the same, based on the age and immunity of the child.
Most of all don’t ignore small infections. If your child is suffering from fever, or even cold, take them to your nearest clinic that offers specialised treatments for kids.

Dr. Neha Bansal from Bansal Global Hospital identifies foods that you should not give to your children before 10

When it comes to your kids, everything needs extra care and a bit of reliable research. And when it comes to their diet, you have to be extra cautious as serving them wrong kind of foods might be hazardous to their health. Generally, a baby starts eating light food from an age of about six months. As he grows up, we try to get him used to the food everyone eats. But there are certain foods which you must keep completely away from your child at least till he turns ten! Here’s the list you can refer to:

Processed Meat

Most of the processed meat has to go through various chemical treatments to increase its shelf life. Other than this, the amount of salt is beyond normal and is not good for heart health. Processed meats are also known to cause bowel cancer. It is therefore recommended that it doesn’t make it to your child’s plate.

Child Specialist in NCR

Artificially Sweetened food

Artificial sweeteners such as aspartame and sucralose may cause more harm than good. They are marketed as ‘diet’ or ‘sugar free’ but are slow poison for kids. It is found in gelatine, ice creams and candies etc. These foods may lead to improper brain development in kids.

Soda

Carbonated beverages are not just dehydrating but also cause sugar disorder like diabetes. Soda depletes tooth enamel and makes tooth brittle. These beverages are also harmful for the gut of your kid.

Canned foods

Canned foods such as fish and pickled vegetables cause food poisoning. These foods also go through a lot of processing and are low in nutrients. So, it is better that they make a distance from your child’s diet.

Refined oil

Refined oils are highly bleached and processed which erodes all the nutrients found in oils. They are not only low in nutrients but also high in trans fat which cause cholesterol. Be a smart parent and use other healthier oils in your kitchen, that too in low amounts.

Caffeine

Caffeine may adversely affect the central nervous system in children. Kids may face sleep disturbances and difficulty concentrating. Caffeine may be addicting and cause long term health problems.
Regulate your child’s eating habits and keep him safe! For more dietary and other consultancy prefer going to a child specialist/ paediatrician than depending on home remedies and random recommendations.
